The day was sunny and bright – perfect for a tour of Hudson County with Tracye McDaniel, President and CEO of Choose: New Jersey. The tour was designed to introduce McDaniel to Chamber Members and highlight the development and assets that are available in Hudson County. The event also highlighted the Chamber’s plan to focus future events and initiatives on promoting the region as a great place to start and grow a business.
The tour began at the Jersey City Medical Center where McDaniel met Maria Nieves, President and CEO of the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, Joseph Scott, President and CEO of the Jersey City Medical Center, and members of the JCMC senior staff. The group toured the Medical Center’s emergency operations hub and the emergency department, which is slated for further growth.
After touring the Medical Center, McDaniel joined Chamber Members at Fidelity Investments on the Waterfront in downtown Jersey City for a roundtable discussion focused on how Choose: New Jersey can help Hudson County continue to grow.
“This is my job,” stated McDaniel, “to attract companies and retain the companies that are here.” As a component of the Partnership for Action, Choose: New Jersey works alongside the Business Action Center and the Economic Development Authority to bring in and retain New Jersey businesses. “Our [Choose: New Jersey’s] goal is to market and create a comprehensive marketing strategy for the state of New Jersey; to position the state as a world class leader; to generate leads and prospects to cultivate and close deals so companies come into the state. We’re going straight to the CEO, straight to the site consultant and having talks with them directly to attract business to New Jersey.”
The roundtable provided for robust conversation between McDaniel and Chamber Members. One question from Jim Miller, Jr. of Liberty Savings Federal Credit Union, a Chamber Member, regarding how cities and counties are selected for promotion by Choose: New Jersey, allowed for the following explanation from McDaniel: “We market the entire state. It’s based on the research. We also collaborate on business deals with the local economic development groups.”
One feature of Choose: New Jersey’s website is the county profiles where prospective investors and businesses can research each of the State’s 21 counties and determine which is best for the products and services they provide. According to McDaniel, since 2010 more than 173 companies – with about 50,000 jobs – have already been brought in thanks to the efforts of the Partnership for Action.
Following the roundtable, McDaniel and others visited Saint Peter’s University and went on a hard hat tour of the New Student Center with Dr. Eugene Cornacchia, Saint Peter’s President and members of his senior team. Touring Saint Peter’s gave McDaniel the opportunity to understand their new designation as a university and the transformation underway at McGinley Square.
